Paris Is Burning : Chapter 14

It's Not The Crime It's The Cover-up

The crime that Cortland Day and the Supervisor's have committed is a blend of two things. The first is the story that inspired the film Bad Education where two high profile school administrators created fake companies and billed the county.

The other (which I can't find the name of because they are so many cases like this) is about a female financial advisor in the 80's who was highly-regarded for the returns she gave her clients...except the returns were fake. She used a copier to make fake earning statements for decades.

I sort of combined them into one. I wanted Day and the supervisors to come off as sympathetic---which is why I think there were comments trying to figure out why they would do it. But there actually is no justification for what they did. They might say it was the recession or because of family issues but excuses like that only work for rich people.

 Chapter 13

Paris confronts Cortland about the embezzlement and finds out that thousands of fake invoices have been created and submitted by Cortland. He also learns that the rest of the supervisor's are in on it too. Which is why they have iced him out. The town has been hemorrhaging money and even though Day worked out a deal with the developers to pay the money back, Paris still isn't convinced.

If Paris goes to the feds, the illegal way he obtain the information could expose Sera's client list.

It's mutually assured destruction for the Days and Princes. Who will blink first ?
